VIDEO: How to Get Your T-shirt Designs onto Heat Transfer Paper

By  Cartess Ross

I’m still getting asked a ton of questions about this heat transfer paper stuff, so I thought I’d shoot yet another video about this. Hopefully this will be the last video about  how the transfer paper works:

Part 1:

Part 2:

I will guide you through this process and provide you with proven strategies to help you build a t-shirt company. As one of the original pioneers to start selling t-shirts online 20 years ago, I've sold millions of dollars in t shirts to people all over the world. I founded TshirtRiches in 2007 to teach others how to turn their t-shirt ideas into a business. So if you're ready, hop onboard and let's make this money!

Cartess Ross

  • I was just wondering, if you wanted to hand draw a design on a piece of paper, would you scan it, open it in photoshop, then proceed th normal process? Also what company do you use to get the prints, and how much is a 16×20 press? I don’t want to go into this as a business, I just want to make myself and my family a couple shirts! So if you could reply that would be great, thanks!

    • If you’re not trying to go into business, it’d probably be cheaper to get a local screen printer to make these t-shirts for you. The costs are too high if your only goal is to make a handful of shirts for yourself/family.

      • What if you are trying to start a business and sell them online? Do you scan your paper that has your design that you drew by hand and then open in photo shop?

        • HI Marlene,

You would need to hire a graphic artist to create the designs for you. Once the designs have been created, you’ll use the digital low resolution files to upload to display for potential sales. Scanning only allows for poor quality and poor presentation of your product(s).

    • Hello. I draw my own designs, so I could skip sending them to a graphic artist. My next step would be to transfer design to transfer paper, how do I do that without sending it off to someone to do it for me? I want to do everything myself

      • Hi Penelope,
The only way to do it all yourself when using plastisol transfer is to purchase large screen printing equipment and learning traditional screen printing techniques. The inks also require special disposal to avoid fines. It’s not very feasible, but it is possible.

        Thank you,
        Judy

  • Hey Cartess,

Pretty good info. I own a T-shirt business as well. If you don’t mind me asking what companies are you using to get your artwork printed on the paper. Or do i need to buy the book…lol

    • You’ll need to buy the book 🙂

Seriously, here is one source for ya, there are more in the book with great pricing:
      Quick Trans

  • Would you recommend BestCustomizedDesigns for creating heat transfers in your book….or do you have even better pricing competition?

    • I’m not sure I understand your question… are you asking me to include and recommend BestCustomizedDesigns in my book? Could u include a url?

  • Hey Cartess, Im located in the UK. Do you have any places I can get the transfers made over here?
    Thanks for your time.

  • Brian Mathabela says:

Hey, I’m hoping to start a T-Shirt business later this year. Could you please send me the website link for the company you used to do the heat transfers for you?

    much appreciation Brian

    • One such company is a site called Transfer Express: http://www.txpress.com
They are a great place to start, but rather expensive. Throughout our course, we provide much cheaper alternatives than the one listed above. The link above makes a great quality custom transfer though!

  • hi

could you reccomend a good source for t-shirts?
and could you reccomend a good source for big size t-shirts?

    thanks

    lenny

    • Never had to buy big big t-shirts, sorry I can’t help you here Lenny.

  • Can u print onto transfer paper from printer or it needs to be from a screen?

  • first where do you get the transfer paper and how would you get your images on them if you don’t prefer using your home printer. is there a certain machine you use for this.

  • Gmassagehealer says:

Where can you buy the transfer paper?

  • I have a heat press and the design! Can I just buy the paper from a paper store and take it to kinko’s to get it printed out??? if so, can you tell me the BRAND of the heat transfer paper you use?
    Thanks

  • Johnellejames says:

What is the name of the brand of transfer paper you purchase?

  • Dear Mr Cartess,

You vids are indeed helpful. From my observation, you could print very nicely on the shirt without first having to cut out the design. I wonder how. I’m starting to print shirt now but i have a problem that i need to first cut the design from the transfer paper before heat pressing it. Otherwise it will appear that the whole paper (inclusive of the plain part) has been printed on the garment and it looks terrible and certainly not salebale. What do you think is my problem if you dont mind? Regards

    Shahir

Do you have to have a graphic artist do your design?

  • Sedric-moody says:

What transfer company do you use?

  • Anonymous says:

No you don’t. If you’re familiar with graphic arts software and already know how to do the designing yourself, you won’t need a graphic artist. I don’t know how to draw nor do I have the patience to learn all of that software stuff. I realize there are people far more artistic than I am with this stuff and I’d rather have them take my vision and turn it into reality.

  • Hello Cartess —

Thank you for being willing to share your knowledge and information. I am researching how to buy t-shirts wholesale and have read warnings regarding whom to buy from. Any suggestions for vendors that you have used? Word of mouth is the best recommendation.

  • Mrs.Carty says:

Hello, I loved watching and listening. You are funny and great I love it.
    Mrs. Carty

  • I had a question. Are we able to use the heat press machine and transfer papers on hoodies and sweatshirts as well?

  • I just started screen printing on a small scale. It’s definitely more involved, messy and time consuming, but I do like it. The finish product looks great. I happened to run into your website and didn’t realize that you order transfers from companies that do screen printing. This opens up a new avenue for my business. I can start to make these transfers and offer them wholesale (once I have perfected the system) to T-Shirt business owners. You have a great website and I thank you for the free advice.

Thanks for the kind words… The possibilities are endless with transfers!

  • Anonymous says:

Absolutely… You can even print on baseball/football jerseys, aprons, bibs, towels, jeans, etc… You can come up with some creative stuff to print onto and even start a new trend!

  • Lovelyliisa007 says:

    Hello Mr. Ross,
What heat transfer machine are you using in your videos? Because it doesn’t look like the “Gecko” heat press.

    Lisa

  • The one you see in the video is a Hotronix manual press (16×20). This is the machine I keep at home in my garage. The Gecko is used at the office. I’ll get it home soon and will start using on the videos.

  • Hi Joe,

I am not sure but most of the companies we use do ship outside the US. Please check the course out to gain access to those suppliers!

    Thanks

  • Delionwilkins says:

Do I have to worry about a company running with my design when getting my transfers made?

  • Hi Cartess. I am a very good artist and can draw up my own designs. Is there any companies that you would recommend i send my designs to to print onto transfers for me?

    • We have a source list available for purchase. The source list includes various companies to purchase custom, and pre-made transfers. As well as blank t-shirts at wholesale cost.

The price for custom transfers will be determined by the amount of colors you have in your design. If you are on a tight budget then I would recommend no more than 2 colors in the design. The more colors in the design the more it will cost to have the designs screen printed onto the release paper.

If you would, please click the link below to purchase the source list.

  • hey cartess.. can you press the designs on thick sweaters?

    • Hi Serg,

Yes, you can! Make sure the sweater is either 100% cotton or at least 50% cotton.

  • hi Cartess , I’m tryna get in the tshirt buisness I have a heat press but how do I make my own transfers ?? or get them ?

    • Hi Kayla,

We highly recommend screen printed transfers. Printing from a printer will not provide you the same results as screen printed designs and will not last as longer. The transfers we have are better than the transfer paper sold in stores. Again, this method can not replace or compare to screen printed transfers.

    • Hi Edwin,

I apologize, but we do not have a design book. If you’re more interested in find out where to send your designs out to be screen printed, we have that information.

  • Hi,

Do need screen printer to make transfer paper? Only heat machine will not be enough right?
As in our country it is difficult to get transfer paper.

I want to start this business and I am encouraged from your videos.
    God bless.

    • To make screen print and/or plastisol transfer paper yourself, you will need traditional screen print equipment.

  • Kashif Siddique says:

I want to make paper by myself for heat transfer products

    • Hi Kashif,
We recommend screen printed transfers. We do not recommend printing from a printer just for the sake of quality. You want to be in business selling products that will allow people to buy from you over and over again; as well as refer others to you. Sadly, printing from a printer will not allow you to do so.

Once you have your designs created; you can send the digital files of the designs to transfer companies. They can take your design and screen printed directly onto the special release paper. There are no printers involved in this process. All the designs are printed by screen printing equipment. Once the designs have been screen printed onto the special release paper instead of directly on shirts. They’ll send you the transfers; which you’ll press directly onto the shirts using the heat press machine you’ve purchased.

  • I am the artist who draws will just need someone to put my artwork on to the transfer paper where do I find such a person
