More T-shirt Transfer Questions Addressed in This Video… And Beware of Friends and Family

By  Cartess Ross

Got a few great questions  today and I thought I’d answer these with a quick video… One of the questions came about because this guy was catching a bunch of heat from family and friends who felt he should be screen printing his t-shirts, and not using the heat press method.

Another person had questions about whether the same adult sized transfers could be used to print onto youth sized tees; and the last question dealt with whether or not to use models to showcase t-shirt designs (models wearing your t-shirts and taking pictures).

Watch the video and enjoy… as always, post your questions below!

I will guide you through this process and provide you with proven strategies to help you build a t-shirt company. As one of the original pioneers to start selling t-shirts online 20 years ago, I've sold millions of dollars in t shirts to people all over the world. I founded TshirtRiches in 2007 to teach others how to turn their t-shirt ideas into a business. So if you're ready, hop onboard and let's make this money!

what format do my art need to be in an order to make transfers?

    • what is the best transfer paper to use? What is a real good printer to use? Can I also get a few web site for catalogs that sell there own designs? I want to also sell T-shirts with rhinestone designs, is there a site were I can get custom rhinestones design on transfer paper?

      • Hi George,

We highly recommend screen printed transfers. We don’t recommend printing from a printer. We have a source list available for purchase. The source list includes various companies to purchase custom, and pre-made transfers from a list of transfer vendors as well as vendors to purchase blank shirts.

The price for custom transfers will be determined by the amount of colors you have in your design. If you are on a tight budget then I would recommend no more than 2 colors in the design. The more colors in the design the more it will cost to have the designs screen printed onto the release paper.

If you would, please click the link below to purchase the source list.

  • Each company has their own requirements… You should be able to find the answer on their websites…. Or contact them directly with your request.

  • Cartess –

Thanks for the new information. When I get discouraged about doing a t-shirt business and going forward, I check out your videos and get inspired to move ahead. Thanks.

  • with silk screen transfers do you still get that outline of the transfer or just the image?

  • Hi Cartess, thank you so much for all your information it is truly helpful. Unless I missed it I didn’t hear you answer the question on whether the transfers will crack or peel after washing because I have bought tees from stores that did that after several washings. That is a big concern I have especially since I have no intention of selling my custom t shirts for fifteen or twenty dollars.

    Thank you

    Sheila

  • They won’t fade or crack or peel. Like any business, some vendors/companies put out crap. Many of these guys put out great transfers and that is a problem u shouldn’t have to worry about… I’d encourage you to try a sample pack so u can see the quality for yourself. Wash it 50 times and you’ll be blown away with the way it keeps up — you’ll tear the shirt up before the transfer comes off: http://tshirtriches.com/tee-pack/

  • Should there be a waffle look on the custom transfer when you get them, and is it ideal to use the white back ground on a transfer when printing on dark colors to have the color maintain it’s color on a dark shirt. Let me know

  • spiritusa says:

I had the same question about the transfer sizes. Thanks for answering. I’m currently waiting on my heat press machine and looking for people to sell me transfers. I’m using your list and finding your information very helpful. I want to sign up for your membership but just can’t afford it right now. I’m sure it’s worth it though.
From now on I’ll be sure to print my questions on here.

hi Cartess, I want to start my own t-shirt biz and im trying to get the capital that i need so ican start my course with you. I had a tsirt made with a design i came up with but the company says they keep my design because his graphic artis helped made it. the phrase is mine i got it copywrited but i dont have the original screen for it. so to avoid this again. i want to know if i send you a design but have your graphic artis perfect it cus i cant draw a lick. what rights do i have and do you send my stuff back. one more question. how much is it for your graphic artist ? and how do i go about sending my work to be put on transfer paper pppllleeeaassee help

  • Not sure I know what you mean with a ‘waffle look’. It could depend upon your design. Try and transfer it onto a shirt and see what happens. Paper color doesn’t matter. I assume you indicated you wanted your design to be printed onto dark colored garments — there’s extra steps the transfer companies do to ensure it prints onto dark colored garments.

  • i really respect your grind you are a very positive person

  • A person who is not teaching for his own winning is a great man. A person who sincerely wants people to succeed is a true man.

    Thank You!

  • Hi Cartess,
My name is carmella and I want to know if I need a business License and tax Id before I get started?

  • It depends on your local county/city laws. I can’t advise you on that, but I can tell you what I did when I got started… I made money first, then I invested in the appropriate things later, such as biz license, corporation, etc… I’m not telling you to do that — I’m simply stating what I did to get started. I didn’t want to spend the limited funds I had on something I didn’t think would make me money right away. I spent money on the things I felt would get me a return on investment 😉

  • Hey this is Ryan( aka DoubleR) can you tell me how I could screen print an oversized image (from home-do it yourself) onto transfer paper? It will be greatly appreciated if you can answer that for me!

  • Thredzoneplus says:

Hi Cartess, My name is Mike and I was wondering if you sell just the spiritual transfers?

  • Ryan again I was wanting to know if you could use the New Super Wide Printer JV34-260 machine to print small and oversized designs on to transfer paper and would you recomend it?

  • I am wanting to start a Christian T-shirt business, but I’m trying to find out everything I can before trying to get into it. Could you please give me some links to some vendors who sell blank T-shirts and heat press transfers?I tried searching around on Google and couldn’t find anything. in one video you did, you said you posted links to some vendors below but I couldn’t find them. Could you please help me?My name is Josh and I am  a fan of yours on facebook.

  • can you use a Canon wide printer to capture your oversized design onto transfer paper?

  • I’ve done it in the past. I didn’t like the quality back then, but I hear they’ve come much further along.

  • There will be absolutely nothing left behind. The only thing that will transfer is the ink itself.

  • Yes, we actually recommend having the transfer designs outsourced that a company that specializing in transfers.
We do not print our designs from a printer. The designs are screen printed onto a special release paper. Unfortunately, the type of paper we use can not be purchase from
your local stores such as Walmart, Hobby lobby, etc.

We use several transfer companies that print our designs out for us. The method is very similar to screen printing. The only difference the design is screen printed onto the special release paper instead directly onto the shirt.

Unlike printing from a printer, the quality sucks the designs usually peel/fade after the first wash.
Since we do not use printers to print our designs because the quality just sucks! We are unable to recommend or give any advice on which printer to purchase.

We have a source list available for purchase. The source list includes various companies to purchase custom, and pre-made transfers. As well as blank t-shirts at wholesale cost.

The price for custom transfers will be determined by the amount of colors you have in your design. If you are on a tight budget then I would recommend no more than 2 colors in the design. • Sublimation press and heat press are the same thing — let me know which video you saw that on so I can correct it… I might have been talking about the way the inks are processed — where sublimation ink and heat transfers are a different process — but the machine to press the tee is one and the same.

    • Hi the video was and Beware of Friends and Family where you reference buying the right heat press machine for custom transfers and not a machine for sublimation process.

      Kelly

      • Sorry for the confusion… The sublimation heat press and regular ‘heat press’ are the same machine. They do the same thing.

  • Hi Cartess,
Am about to start my own t shirt business and about to order some some stock transfers from a company (its name starts with pro). They also had a deal on heat transfer machine if you buy a certain quantity of their transfers. I would like to know if their product ie stock transfers and the heat press machine that they offer are of a good quality.

    • Hi Chris,

Pro world offers quality transfers. However, they are quite higher than the others since the purchase the transfers and resell. 🙂 Which is why we do not include them on our vendor’s list.

  • Hi i just bought a heat press off of ebay and it says heat transfer press and sublimation machine will this be ok to use?

  • Hey Cartess,
I have a heat press on the way!! I’m looking at printers to make my own transfers before I outsource for plastisols. I was assuming i could use a WF 7010 to start. What are the minimum requirements for a printer for my own transfers and what paper should i use?
    Thanks,
    Tony

    • Hi Tony,

We highly recommend screen printed transfers. Printing from a printer will not provide you the same results as screen printed designs and will not last as longer. The transfers we have are better than the transfer paper sold in stores. Again, this method can not replace or compare to screen printed transfers.

We recommend the Epson WF-70-10 printer.
If you wish to print your own designs from your printer…please click the link below.

We do not recommend using the inks that come with the printer.

  • Hi,

Thanks Kim. If I order bulk plastisol transfer paper and send it with my designs to a screen printer, you think I could work some discounts on prints? Also, I would really prefer to print my own just to get started. This is mostly because I would like to do custom prints on the spot for trade shows, festivals, etc. What, in your experience, has been the best transfer paper to use?

    Thanks,

    Tony

    • Hi Tony,

We highly recommend screen printed transfers. You can not order screen plastisol paper. Any local screen printer you hire will be able to provide you with what you need as far as printing is concerned. It would be best to have the screen printer print directly onto the shirts for you. This will also allow you to have your own designs printed onto shirts as well as the best possible quality.

  • I would like to know if we print some from the printer can we iron them on. Heat press is just out my budget right now?

    • Hi Whitney,

We do not recommend printing from a printer and you definitely can NOT use an iron. You may have to get a second job or get creative to come up with the funds to purchase a heat press. 🙂
