MASTERCLASS:

Get Your 1st T-shirt Design Idea Created by Top Graphic Designers for Pennies on the Dollar

In order to get your t-shirt design ideas put onto screen printed transfers, you must first send your finished artwork in a digital format to a screen printer who specializes in making screen print transfers.

And you do that by either creating your own designs using high end software like Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator ... Or you can do it the simple way, by hiring a graphic designer to create your design ideas for you.

I love this business because you don't have to know how to draw ... You don't have to have an artistic eye ... And you don't have to know how to use any of the advanced graphic design software, which can take years to master.

There are graphic designers out in the marketplace that are far more creative than most of us will ever be. All you have to do is come up with the idea and let them turn your ideas into a masterpiece.

For example, my 14-year old daughter sketched out the following design idea on a piece of paper:

Skate Til You Die

We posted a design contest on the Freelancer website, and a graphic designer took her ideas and turned it into the following design:

Skateboard T-shirt

The service is very easy to use ... You're essentially hosting a design contest amongst other graphic designers. You write up a detailed description of what you envision for your design, and you submit that, along with 'reward money' for the contest (this could be as little as $30 bucks).

All of the graphic designers in the Freelancer database are notified about your new contest. They come read the brief, and if they're interested, they'll design your idea and submit it for you to review.

This contest format could get you upwards of 100 different designs from 100 graphic designers. You get to pick out the ones you like and submit the changes you wish to see.

At the end of the contest, you choose the winning design and the graphic designer gets the reward money you included with your project...

Many of these designers live in foreign countries where their cost of living is very cheap compared to the U.S. cost of living.

You're essentially tapping into some of the best graphic designers in the world, and getting artwork done for cheap. For that $30 contest money, it's not unusual to get 50-100 submissions of your idea from multiple designers.

This was another skateboard t-shirt idea my daughter came up with ... We ran this contest on another website called DesignCrowd.

From the contest at DesignCrowd, we ended up getting over 84 design submissions from their community of graphic designers.

My daughter chose the following design as the winner of the contest...

Should You Create Your Own T-shirt Designs or Not?

If you're not already a graphic designer, now isn't the time to learn how to become one. This takes a lot of skill and years of practice. Most of these graphic designers eat, sleep, and drink graphic design.

For the cost to hire someone to do this for you, it just doesn't make sense to learn this. The curve for learning how to use these high-end graphic design software is ridiculous.

It takes a creative eye and brain to know how to manipulate this software to create amazing works of art. It makes more sense to lean on the expertise of these designers and let them create your masterpiece.

If you still insist on trying to learn this yourself, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator are the 2 main software programs used by graphic designers.

RE: Turning Your T-shirt Ideas Into Money

If you'd like to earn money from the t-shirt design ideas you've come up with, this might be the most important page you'll read this year.

That's because I'm going to share a story about how I went from working a mediocre hospital job to selling millions of dollars worth of t-shirts to people all over the world.

And you're going to uncover how you can do the same with your own t-shirt designs from home, and on a shoestring budget.

These are simple t-shirt designs we made and profited from ... And you too could make simple t-shirts like these hours from now and start selling them on the Internet!

I Think I'm a Lot Like You...

I wasn't always the guy making a bunch of money selling t-shirts online...

And frankly, when I started, I didn't even have my own designs. I had to use other people's designs. But I still earned a fortune from their hard work (I'll talk about that in a bit).

Truth be told, I was never much of an artist… I couldn’t draw stick men if my life depended on it. But I always had great ideas and t-shirts was like a blank canvas to me. I could express myself and that's why t-shirts appealed to me.

It's amazing when you come up with a t-shirt concept that didn't exist previously – and complete strangers buy it. It feels good and it's amazing because it validates your creativity, and you get paid!

You start to believe that if one person buys, ten will buy... If ten will buy, one-hundred people will buy ... You start to convince yourself this thing could get really big!

You see, I always loved t-shirts. But things didn’t work out as well as I wish they did when I first started…

I Couldn't Afford to Buy Screen Printing Equipment and the Learning Curve Was Outrageous

If you've looked into starting a t-shirt business, you've probably seen how expensive screen printing equipment cost, and you've probably realized this is probably not something you can do at home or in a spare bedroom.

And not just that, the learning curve is atrocious.

I spent a few hundred bucks and took a weekend screen printing crash course and walked out of there more confused ... On the low end, a decent setup would start at about $15,000.00

And the equipment was so big and bulky, it would almost be impossible to do this from home. Not only that, the chemicals and inks were toxic; I couldn't imagine breathing this stuff day in and day out. Plus, some city/county ordinances wouldn't allow you to even run this from home if you wanted too.

Even hiring a local screen printer to do the shirts for me would still cost a fortune. I couldn't get true wholesale costs dealing with a middle man.

Plus, in order to even get a decent price break, I had to order a BUNCH of t-shirts. The math just never made sense.

I wanted to control the process, but it wasn't practical for me to start with screen printing.

The Next Best Thing to Screen Printing Was a T-shirt Heat Press Machine and Screen Printed Transfers (also known as Plastisol Transfers)

When I first started using screen printed transfers, I quickly realized how this was a great alternative to screen printing... In fact, the quality was just as good as traditional screen printing.

What you see in the photograph above is a plastisol transfer. It's called that because the inks that are on the paper is a plastisol ink. This is the exact type of ink screen printers use to print onto t-shirts and other types of garments.

But instead of screen printing the design onto a shirt, these screen printers will transfer the design onto this special type of release paper.

You then use a heat press machine to transfer the inks from the paper on to the tshirt. Essentially giving you a screen print quality t-shirt.

Because the inks are the same plastisol inks used by screen printers, the shirts can last years. The quality is great and the inks do not peel, smudge, smear, nor peel after washing.

I have t-shirts that are still holding up 8 years later after using this process.

The machine you see in the pic above is a heat press. It works like a high pressured iron. We turn up the heat to about 380 degrees Fahrenheit, and lay down a blank t-shirt, and put the screen printed transfer face-down onto the shirt.

We close down and lock the heat press onto the shirt and transfer, and the high pressure and extreme heat from the press releases the inks from the paper and bakes it into the shirt.

And now you have a screen print quality tee.

Let me be very clear ... In order to get these screen print quality transfers, you must go through a screen printer who specializes in this process.

You CANNOT print these on your own using a regular inkjet or laser printer. These are NOT the same transfer paper sold at Walmart, Hobby Lobby, JoAnn's, or Michael's.

This is a special type of release paper, and screen printers actually go through the entire screen printing process to transfer these inks onto the release paper (instead of putting the inks onto a garment, these screen printers put the designs directly onto large sheets of release paper.

They're not very expensive if you know how to work it ... I've been able to get my custom screen printed transfers for as little as $0.20 - $0.50 cents each.

Much cheaper than what screen printers traditional charge to screen print onto a t-shirt.

The Heat Press and Screen Printed Transfer, Just Like Any Other Method for Making Shirts, is a Tool

And it's a tool that can be used to make both poor and amazing t-shirts.

While there are a variety of ways to get shirts made, each has their pros and cons.

For example, there's the Direct to Garment (DTG) printer. These printers are super expensive and can start out at $10,000.00 and go up from there.

The inks are super expensive. When you run out, you have to fork over a lot of cash to replenish your inks. Also, the quality isn't as good as screen printing, nor is the quality better than screen printed transfers.

Don't take my word for it, read the reviews yourself ... The designs don't last as long on the shirts. They have a cheap feel, and they don't look as good.

While this method offers you the convenience of printing at home, your profit margins are much lower, and you run the risk of not getting repeat business because the quality is not as great.

My suggestion, buy a quality heat press machine, and use a reputable screen printer that specializes in screen printed  transfers (plastisol).

You Don't Need Talent for Designing Incredible T-shirts

When I started selling t-shirts online, people started telling me how creative and talented I was for coming up with these amazing designs. Little did they know ... Those designs weren't even mine.

When I first got started, I couldn't afford to make my own designs. So instead of coming up with 10, 20 or 30 different designs, I borrowed t-shirt designs from other talented graphic designers.

Yep ... There are transfer companies that sell 'stock transfer designs' from thousands of other graphic designers. You choose the category of shirt you wish to sell, and choose from the thousands of designs available.

I chose to go after the religious/Christian market and chose Christian themed tees. Some of the designs you see above (Real Men Pray Everyday) were top sellers for us ... Scroll below to see how they looked on actual shirts:

We chose the religious niche, but there are thousands of designs you can choose from. If you're into motorcycles, there are designs for that.

If you're into shirts based on occupation, you can  choose categories like nursing, doctors, firefighters, golfers, truckers, teachers, and so on.

If you're into dogs or cats, there's hundreds of designs to choose from.

Other categories include patriotic, confederates, gun rights, automotive, seasonal, resort towns, nature, glitter, western, military and so on.

There are plenty of opportunities for you to start with.

You Don't Have to Know How to Draw

As I mentioned previously, you don't have to know how to draw to be successful. In fact, you don't even need to purchase high-end graphic design software like Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop.

There are talented graphic designers  all around the world that'll create your design for pennies on the dollar.

For a few hundred bucks, I had a graphic designer create all of the following designs for me ... I simply sketched out my ideas on paper, and they took care of the rest.

In the example below, I found a graphic of an Life Saver online to show the designer, and then I sketched out what I wanted and sent it to him.

And this is what he created for me...

Christian Grace

To build a successful business, your time should be spent on coming up with new designs. Not trying to figure out how to graphic design software ... The people that use this software eat, drink and sleep graphic design.

It can take you months to learn the software and still won't know how to maximum it's use to make it worthwhile. Let these graphic design wizards turn your ideas into a work of art ...

It's little tips like these that'll make or break your business. There's only so much you can do in a day. And in order to grow and build something amazing, you must be willing to let go and outsource some of this stuff to others who can do it better than you

This is why I wanted to create an easier option for people like you who want to build a legitimate business around their t-shirt design ideas...

Module 3: Researching Your Market

If you fail to plan, then you should plan to fail ... This is the boring stuff no one wants to do. But you'll quickly discover the most successful t-shirt entrepreneurs did the necessary grunt work in order to get the advantage.

We spend a bit of time here researching the market to help you find  an 'advantage' that can help your tshirt business take off. Much of this starts by researching your competitors. Module 4: Business Essentials

Getting a business license, along with the appropriate permits, is a cinch. We cover all of that here.

To setup a bank account with your company name (instead of yours), requires additional paperwork (like getting a Federal Tax ID number (also known as TIN or EIN).

We cover all of this in the training - it's pretty easy. Some folks have said they can't get a bank account because of credit or a bad file in ChexSystems (you can generally get a business banking account in the biz name regardless -- we show you how).

Also, you'll need State sales tax i.d. # in order to purchase wholesale from vendors. We got you covered!

So here's what you'll discover inside Module 4:

  • How to come up with the right business name (many get this wrong)
  • Getting your business license and permits
  • Establishing your corporation/LLC
  • Getting a state sales tax ID to buy wholesale products
  • Establishing a checking account in the business name

Module 5: Getting Your T-shirt Website Online

For most, the bulk of your business will come from Internet sales. Back in the day, it would easily cost $5,000 - $10,000 to get an e-commerce website made.

However, technology has changed so much that practically anyone can get online and take payments within hours. We discuss the best practices for setting up e-commerce t-shirt websites that sell, as well as choosing a proper dot-com name for your tshirt company.

The simple techniques discussed in this training section makes all the difference in how well your t-shirts will sell.

So here's what you'll discover inside Module 5:

  • How to select and buy the right dot-com name for your t-shirt business
  • Setting up your hosting account
  • Getting your shopping cart setup
  • How to collect payments online with your own merchant account
  • Adding sizing charts to your website to help sell more shirts
  • Setting up shipping options
  • Adding wholesale options to your site to attract resellers
  • Adding a newsletter to keep in touch with prospects and customers

Module 6: Online Marketing for T-shirt Startups

Affiliate marketing was one of the methods we used to get off to a fast start ... This is a method of marketing where you get other related websites to put your graphics and t-shirts on their website and pay them a commission when someone purchases.

We had an army of 'affiliates' promoting our t-shirt company. This gets discussed in this training, along with other online marketing strategies for getting your line of t-shirts in front of the right people.

Marketing is my favorite topic and I'll have lots to share with you in this section. Marketing gets the word out about your t-shirt brand ...

So here's what you'll discover inside Module 6:

  • Executing online marketing campaigns for your t-shirt brand
  • Marketing your t-shirts on other related websites
  • Blogging for traffic and building your brand
  • Using social media to market and sell your t-shirts
  • Selling t-shirts with an army of affiliates
  • How to get traffic from Google and BING with PPC

Find local wholesale distributor that allows you to come inspect blank wholesale apparel

Module 7: Offline Marketing for T-shirt Startups

Most people only think about 'online marketing' and totally ignore the offline marketing opportunities available. There's direct mail, postcards, marketing in printed newsletters, radio, trade shows and more.

We get into all of it and show you amazing stuff you can do with offline marketing. I'll share how we created a reseller program to get other 'offline' people to sell our shirts door to door as a business opportunity. You won't be disappointed with the methods discussed in this training module.

So here's what you'll discover inside Module 7:

  • Executing offline marketing campaigns for your t-shirt brand
  • Using Direct Mail (SRDS) to explode sales
  • Marketing in print publications
  • Attending local and national events and trade shows
  • Creating print catalogs
  • Establishing a reseller program for your t-shirt business

Local wholesale distributor where you can purchase blank caps and tote bags

Module 8: Getting Your T-shirts into Retail Stores

Ever heard of a 'line sheet'? Well ... This is the thing you need if you plan to get your shirts into stores. I'll show you my 'line sheet' and you're free to build yours around it.

We'll cover a lot of the details about getting your shirts into stores in this training session.

So here's what you'll discover inside Module 8:

  • Identifying a target
  • Establishing terms with retailers
  • Creating 'line sheets' to get your tees into stores
  • Sending out sample packages

Module 9: Wholesale Suppliers and Vendors

Over the years, I've dealt with a bunch of vendors. In this section, I share all of the resources I've used, along with some recommendations to ensure you choose the best one for your t-shirt company.

I'll suggest the various places to purchase wholesale blank tees, along with tips that'll help you land the best pricing when you setup a new account.

I'll also refer you to the best t-shirt transfer vendors, stock transfer vendors, and suppliers you'll need for packaging and shipping your tees.

WhileI don't recommend printing your own transfers, I do offer suggestions that'll make it better for those who insist on doing it this way. There's a bunch of resources listed in this section and I'm more than glad to help you navigate your new business venture

So here's what you'll discover inside Module 9:

  • Where to purchase wholesale blanks (tees, caps, bags, totes, sportswear, etc)
  • Get listing of custom plastisol - screen print transfer vendors
  • Stock transfer vendors (use other people's designs to sell t-shirts and make quick money)
  • Packaging and shipping suppliers
  • T-shirt displays and racks for retail locations
  • Best place to get heat press machines and supplies
  • Inkjet printers to use
  • Using high heat pigment inks for printing on your own
  • Heat transfer paper for those insisting on doing it themselves

Module 10: Managing Your T-shirt Business

Much of the stuff you'll deal with are customer service related issues. Some people have very unrealistic expectations and you're gonna need to spell 'EVERYTHING' out so these types don't take advantage of you.

Yes, much of this is basic stuff, but I wished someone shared these tips with me ... They would have saved me a lot of headaches and stress.

I'm gonna share those tips with you in this section.

So here's what you'll discover inside Module 10:

  • Managing customer service issues in your t-shirt business
  • Dealing with returns and refunds (and why you must handle it swiftly)
  • Using an answering service to get more sales
  • Hiring and using virtual assistants
