T-shirts Literally Changed My Life!

I’ve said this many times before… The t-shirt business has been good to me and my family. When I first got out of the Air Force, I had very little money and very little to work with. My mom and I partnered up to start a t-shirt business together and it started to grow rather quickly.

I later went on to start my own brand and things really started to take off. Because of this business, I was able to do things I’d never thought possible. Owning my own business gave me freedom. It allowed me to stay home and watch my kids grow. It allowed us to travel and expose the kids to different things.

I don’t think I could ever go back and work for someone else… The freedom is REAL. I’m not going to lie to you and say that everything was easy… It wasn’t. I had to work my butt off. I had to stay up late. I had to make tough decisions to move the business forward. Some of those decisions were great… While other decisions were poor decisions — some of those decisions got us evicted and thrown out of the apartment AND house we were living in.

But overall — I found my way… I had to learn by trial and error. I had to make the mistakes on my own. I had to throw away perfectly good money in order to learn how NOT to do that again. There was no one I could turn too. There was no course to teach me how to build a t-shirt business. I had to figure it out all by myself.

And you know what… It was all worth it. I’d certainly do it again — but smarter the next time around.

Changing your life with t-shirts can work for you too… You just gotta make the decision to start. Will you make mistakes? Yes you will and there’s nothing that will keep you from making mistakes and boneheaded moves. It all comes with the territory when you decide to get into any kind of business.

If you make the leap and don’t give up, you can be successful. But you gotta make the leap. Stop sitting by the sidelines hoping the business will work out for you. It won’t. You gotta make it happen.

The other day, my 13 year old daughter Skye came to me indicating she had some ideas for a t-shirt design… I don’t believe in doing the work for my kids — so I gave her access to some videos I made that showed her how to get her t-shirt design idea created and here’s what she did…

#1) She sketched out her t-shirt design idea on paper (see below)

#2) For each design, she wrote up a description outlining what she wanted for each design.

#3) Those details were then given to a graphic designer (i show you how to find a good one).

#4) And he just recently submitted these concepts to her for review:

If a 13 year old can get this… Why can’t you? I didn’t do the work for her… I simply provided her access to some resources I created for our members… And she got these made for CHEAP!!! That’s the only thing I gave her (was the training videos and the money to pay for it — she’s only 13 and doesn’t have a job, so I paid for it — but it was cheap.

These aren’t bad at all for her first t-shirt designs… Now can you imagine what this does for a 13 year old’s self-esteem???

When she first saw the designs the graphic designer made, she just stared and stared and smiled. She couldn’t take her eyes away from her newly created designs.

Could she build a million dollar company? As with anything, it’s quite possible. Once a person starts, BIG things start to happen. Fortune favors those who take action and I have a funny feeling she won’t stop now that she’s started.

Once we get the first round of shirts made up, she plans to wear them to the skate park she hangs out at — I know the other kids are gonna want to know where she got them from.

Imagine the shock on their faces when she tells them she created and designed these herself!

Now I realize some of you have questions about the Starbucks trademark issue on the 2nd design…

Now grant it — I had to have a long conversation with her about trademark infringement. But that’s fine. The most important thing was that she got started. Helping her correct course is the easy part (but getting others to start is often the hardest part).

Because of our talk, she now understands what trademark infringement is all about. She’ll likely not make that mistake again. She’s writing up another description in an effort to have that 2nd design made differently.

I’m so proud of her. She’s my middle child and the older 2 often tease her — but unless something changes, they could possibly end up working for her someday 🙂
