Got a few questions from Dwayne in the Netherlands (did I mention Tshirt Riches has members all over the WORLD — but this is a first from the Netherlands)…. Anyhow, I address the following questions from Dwayne  in this video:

  • How much do you need to get started as it relates to equipment, materials, shirts, etc?
  • Do you use a heat press only — have you ever silk screened?
  • How much do you spend on buying transfers?

Don’t hesitate to ask your questions below… I’m here to help!

I will guide you through this process and provide you with proven strategies to help you build a t-shirt company. As one of the original pioneers to start selling t-shirts online 20 years ago, I've sold millions of dollars in t shirts to people all over the world. I founded TshirtRiches in 2007 to teach others how to turn their t-shirt ideas into a business. So if you're ready, hop onboard and let's make this money!

  • Hi Stephen,
When you have your design created by a graphic artist there are two different stages within the process.
If you have an idea and need your idea to come to life; you will need a graphic designer to assist you.
We also have graphic artists available who can assist you. Our team will work with you to create your first design for $195.00
Depending on the complexities of your designs, this price may go up… However, most people will fall within the $195 price range. The few whose designs require more extensive work and design time will be quoted separately before we start.

Once the design has been created by a graphic artist. You will need to send your file to a transfer company. Once they have received your design file. The design will be screen printed on the release paper.
The cost for printing the design onto the paper will vary from vendor to vendor and from design to design. The more colors you have in the design the more it will cost to print. If you are trying to keep the cost down, it’s best to keep the colors in the design to a minimum of 2 colors.
Also the more transfers purchased at one time, the less it will cost.

  • It’s best to send the design off to a transfer company because of the quality they can provide compared to printing the design from a printer. We do not recommend printing from a printer but if that’s the only way you can start right now, then do it. However, be sure to switch to a transfer company as soon as you can!

  • We have a source list available for purchase. The source list includes various companies to purchase custom, and pre-made transfers. As well as blank t-shirts at wholesale cost.
The price for custom transfers will be determined by the amount of colors you have in your design. If you are on a tight budget then I would recommend no more than 2 colors in the design. The more colors in the design the more it will cost to have the designs screen printed onto the release paper.

  • Hi Will and welcome aboard… Are you printing your own designs via a home printer? That would be the only reason I can imagine why you’d see any type of outline around the design/tee.

The customized plastisol (custom screen printed transfers) will not require you to cut around the design. The only thing that’s left behind in the actual design itself. No outline or anything.

The heat from the heat press should be around 385-F… I’ve only had scorching issues with cheap tees I’ve purchased from overseas in the past, but that hasn’t really been an issue. Make sure the press isn’t too hot and left on the tees too long (8-10 seconds). Each transfer vendor will generally include instructions on how long to press and how hot the press should be.

The printing companies are in the business of ‘printing’. You generally will not have any issues from any reputable company — I have had one to steal anything since I’ve been involved since 1999. Hope this helps!

  • From my understanding, there are other processes out there (such as vinyl), that will allow you to print at home — the equipment is extremely expensive — not your ordinary home printer of course.

I plan to expand and purchase new equipment this year to test other printing styles out and will definitely keep everyone posted.

  • Hi i was wondering if we used heat transferred paper method on t-shirt, would those pictures, designes come off, peel, or fade after washing it in the washing machine? If it does come off, is there certain type of transfer paper that’s waterproof or won’t come off after wash??

    • Hi Mandy,

We highly recommend screen printed transfers. You can have pictures, designs, etc. sent to vendors to have screen printed onto plastisol transfers.

We have a source list available for purchase. The source list includes various companies to purchase custom, and pre-made transfers from a list of transfer vendors as well as vendors to purchase blank shirts.

The price for custom transfers will be determined by the amount of colors you have in your design. If you are on a tight budget then I would recommend no more than 2 colors in the design. The more colors in the design the more it will cost to have the designs screen printed onto the release paper.
